Show Notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Julia Stern, Professor and Author of “Bette Davis Black and White”

About Harvey’s Guest:

Professor Julia Stern is an academic and a scholar who is an expert on the film career of the greatest movie star of them all: Bette Davis. Although Miss Davis received every accolade an actor can get, our guest asserts that Bette Davis has not been adequately recognized for her on-and-off-screen collaborative efforts to combat racism and support the African American community.

In her latest book, entitled “Bette Davis Black and White”, she provides an illuminating exposé of Miss Davis’ little known behind the scenes work, such as supporting and mentoring black actors, desegregating the dance floor of the legendary Hollywood Canteen, collaborating with Hattie McDaniel during the war to entertain black servicemen, and joining several black labour organizations.

Julia is the Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence and Professor of English and American Studies, and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of English at Northwestern University. She’s received numerous awards for her teaching and her writing.
